douglasmartini asked: I think it's more than that, though. I think it's the fact that Tom is regressing while everybody else is growing. During Tom's brief relationship with Lucy (before he found out Ron and Wendy were dating), he proved that he could be charming and human. You can tell he genuinely liked Lucy. Here, it just seems like Ann is a prop here, another one of Tom's great-looking clothing...

The problem with Tom and Ann
wonklife: The problem with the Tom and Ann subplot in this season of Parks & Recreation is that it’s forcing viewers to confront the unpleasant fact that if they actually knew Tom Haverford in real life, they would hate him so, so, so much.  This is true.

ninefruits asked: In terms of the ACTUAL meaning of the word "liberal" then Turnbull is very liberal. More so than populist liberals. See Isaiah Berlin's concepts of Positive and Negative Liberty. (This is sent to you, but directed at that guy who I don't know, and, you know, anyone else who wants to argue with me about such things.)

ninefruits asked: I still hold out hope that Malcolm will be PM one day. He's the only person in the whole Parliament who has the intellect, broad experience, understanding of political philosophy and gravitas to be PM. When we get our party going and convince him to move across then it will happen.

I should note, in addition to the last post, that not even FDR himself attempted socialized medicine in the US. It was a bridge too far, and he specifically mentioned how it was near-impossible to get through.  Pretty much every Democratic, and most Republican, Presidents since have tried it.  I wrote a pretty epic essay on the history of health care reform during my MA. I won a prize for it. I...

Marathon Training: Week 1, Day 2
Today was my first outdoor run post-physio. The outdoor runs were always harder than the treadmill ones.  It wasn’t painless, but it was better than before, and it will get better still. I did 4.5kms, about half running and half walking.  Now that I’m using my butt and thigh muscles more, and my calves less, I get fatigued a lot more easily.  It will take a while to condition those...

I managed to get up at 5:30 and go to the gym this morning. I did 45 mins on the cross trainer for the second day in a row.  Every time I’m managed to lose a significant amount of weight, it has involved lots of time on the elliptical, so it’s a good start. Having an iPad is surprisingly great for the gym.  I could watch TV while I worked out, and the time flew by.  It has really...

I finally started watching Luck. I’m pretty proud of the fact I understood absolutely everything. There was nothing new to me. And I find the shots of the races utterly breathtaking.  It’s so great to see something I love rendered so beautifully on screen.

Hey guys, check out my awesome new website →
Our idea is to be “sport without soundbites”. We’re sick of reading the same articles in every outlet, about the same half a dozen players the media considers to be important. We’re sick of cowardly reporters protecting their access to clubs and players rather than writing insightful - and possible critical- articles about the game.   I’m not going to lie: it’s...
